Three New Supplements Worth Knowing About After 40

Posted by Lena Edwards MD on

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I’m not a fan of recommending supplements simply because someone on social media promised they’ll make women over 40 thinner, younger, and maybe even smarter.

Supplements should have a purpose. But as we get older, some of those purposes become increasingly important. Maintaining muscle mass gets harder. Collagen production declines. Oxidative stress (think “internal rusting”) can increase. And our bodies still need adequate nutritional support to repair tissue, recover from exercise, and keep our natural detoxification systems doing their jobs. Sometimes, dietary intake alone simply doesn’t cut it.

That’s why we recently added three new XYMOGEN products to The Edwards Edge supplement store: Collagen Elite, Liposomal Glutathione, and FIT Whey for Sport.

Here’s what they do, who might benefit, and why I thought they were worth adding.

Collagen Elite: More Than a Beauty Supplement

Collagen seems to have become synonymous with smoother skin, thicker hair, and stronger nails. And while those are certainly nice perks, collagen has much bigger jobs.

Collagen is a major structural protein found throughout your body, including your skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissues. That’s one reason I don't think women over 40 should view collagen simply as a beauty supplement.

So what makes this one different from the gazillion other collagen powders out there?

Unlike many products that provide collagen alone, Collagen Elite combines bovine collagen peptides with vitamin C and FloraGLO® lutein. Vitamin C is needed for your body to make collagen, while lutein provides additional antioxidant and skin support. In other words, you're not just getting the building blocks for collagen—you’re getting additional nutrients that help support the tissues you're trying to protect.

This combination helps to support:

  • Skin health
  • Joint and connective tissue health
  • Bone health
  • Mobility and healthy aging
  • Antioxidant defenses

And there's another reason I like this particular formula: there are no other ingredients. No artificial sweeteners, flavors, or laundry list of fillers hiding at the bottom of the label.

Just remember that collagen is not a replacement for adequate dietary protein. Collagen isn't considered a complete protein and shouldn't be your primary source for meeting your daily protein needs. Think of it as targeted structural support instead.

Which brings me to our next addition.

FIT Whey for Sport: Because Your Metabolism Relies on Muscle

We naturally lose muscle as we age, and that loss can accelerate during and after menopause. Among other things, muscle plays important roles in metabolic health, blood sugar regulation, bone health, strength, and endurance.

Resistance training is one of the best ways to protect your muscle. But your muscles also need enough protein to repair and rebuild. That’s where protein powders can fill the gap. Of course, there are countless protein powders out there, so why is this one of my new favorites?

FIT Whey for Sport provides 21 grams of grass-fed whey protein isolate per serving. Unlike whey concentrate, whey isolate undergoes additional filtration, giving you a more concentrated source of protein with less lactose and fat tagging along for the ride. In fact, the whey isolate used in this product retains at least 90% protein.

It also provides all nine essential amino acids along with naturally occurring branched-chain amino acids, including leucine—one of the most important amino acids for stimulating muscle protein synthesis.

And despite the word “Sport” in the name, you don't have to be an athlete to benefit from it.

If you have trouble getting enough protein from food, want to preserve or build muscle, need an easy post-workout protein source, or just want something convenient when a chicken breast at 8:00 in the morning isn't particularly appealing, this can help you meet your daily protein needs.

Liposomal Glutathione: Supporting Your Cellular Cleanup Crew

Glutathione doesn't get nearly as much attention as collagen or protein, but from a metabolic standpoint, it's a pretty big deal. It’s one of your body's most important antioxidants. Your cells make it naturally, and it helps protect them against oxidative stress while also playing an important role in immune function and detoxification pathways. The problem is that oxidative demands can increase with aging, illness, chronic stress, environmental exposures, certain medications, poor nutrition, and other metabolic stressors.

You can support your body's production of glutathione by supplying nutrients such as cysteine, glycine, selenium, and other cofactors. Sometimes, direct glutathione supplementation may also be useful. The challenge has historically been getting enough of it absorbed. That’s where this product shines.

XYMOGEN's Liposomal Glutathione provides 250 mg of Setria® reduced glutathione in a liposomal delivery system. Liposomes essentially surround the glutathione in tiny fat-based particles that help protect it as it travels through your digestive system and support better absorption.

And unlike many liposomal products that come as liquids or gels, this one comes in a convenient once-daily capsule. XYMOGEN uses powdered ingredients specifically so it can maintain greater control over manufacturing, purity, and consistency from start to finish.

But let’s be honest. That doesn't mean glutathione is a magical "detox" pill capable of undoing three glasses of wine, four hours of sleep, and a weekend of questionable decisions. Think of it as extra support for the cellular cleanup crew your body already has working around the clock.

The Bottom Line

As we age, our nutritional needs change. And even with the healthiest diet, prescription drugs, gut gridlock, and other factors can interfere with how well we absorb and utilize the nutrients we eat—or increase our need for certain ones.

Does every woman need a cabinet full of supplements to stay healthy? Absolutely not. I recommend patients follow the same approach I use: maintain a bare minimum of foundational “stay healthy” supplements for women over 40—like omega-3s and probiotics—and selectively add others based on your individual needs.

And if you’re going to fork over your hard-earned money for supplements, make sure you’re actually getting what you’re paying for. Less expensive products can certainly be good products, but quality, sourcing, formulation, dosing, and independent testing matter. A bargain isn't much of a bargain if the product doesn't contain the right form, the right amount, or isn't well absorbed.

That’s why I chose to add these three products to our store. They each serve a specific purpose, they meet the quality standards I look for, and they give you a few more options when food alone—or your current supplement regimen—simply isn't getting the job done.
