Why Every Woman Over 40 Should Care About Grip Strength

If you think that the strongest predictors of your future health is your cholesterol, blood pressure, or even your weight…think again. It’s actually how hard you can squeeze.

It sounds almost too simple to be true, yet grip strength has become one of the most widely studied markers of healthy aging. Researchers have found that weaker grip strength is associated with a higher risk of disability, osteoporosis, falls, fractures, frailty, cardiovascular disease, and even premature death.

Fortunately, grip strength can be measured and, if low, can also be improved.

 

Why Grip Strength Matters

Grip strength is exactly what it sounds like: the amount of force your hand and forearm muscles can generate when you squeeze something. While it may seem like an odd thing to measure, your grip actually reflects much more than the strength of your hands. It serves as a convenient window into your overall muscle health.

As we age—especially after menopause—we naturally begin losing muscle mass and strength, a condition known as sarcopenia. Because the small muscles in the hands and forearms often weaken alongside the larger muscles throughout the body, grip strength provides a surprisingly accurate snapshot of overall physical function.

Think of it as your body's "check engine" light. A weaker grip doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong, but it may signal that your muscles need attention.

 

Why Women Over 40 Should Pay Attention

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause accelerate the loss of both muscle and bone.

Declining estrogen contributes to reduced muscle protein synthesis, slower recovery after exercise, and increased inflammation. At the same time, women often become less physically active because of fatigue, joint pain, poor sleep, or busy lifestyles. The combination can gradually erode strength without many women realizing it.

The problem isn't simply having weaker hands. Loss of muscle strength throughout the body can make everyday activities more difficult, increase the risk of falls, slow metabolism, reduce insulin sensitivity, and make maintaining a healthy weight significantly more challenging.

 

How Grip Strength Is Measured

The gold standard is a handheld device called a hand dynamometer. During the test, you squeeze the handle as hard as possible for a few seconds. The measurement takes less than a minute and can easily be performed in many physical therapy clinics, sports medicine offices, or wellness centers. Unfortunately, it's still not routinely included during annual physical examinations.

Even without formal testing, however, your body often gives you clues. Ask yourself:

  • Are jars becoming harder to open? 
  • Do grocery bags feel heavier than they used to? 
  • Does carrying luggage tire your hands? 
  • Do your hands fatigue quickly while gardening or cooking? 
  • Are you struggling to hold yourself on exercise equipment or while doing planks? 

While these aren't diagnostic, they can suggest that your overall strength deserves some attention.

 

Grip Strength Is Trainable

Unlike many aspects of aging, muscle strength responds remarkably well to exercise—even into our seventies and eighties. The best way to improve grip strength isn't necessarily by buying a hand gripper. Instead, focus on building total-body strength. Exercises that work especially well include:

  • Deadlifts 
  • Farmer's carries (walking while holding heavy dumbbells or kettlebells) 
  • Rows 
  • Pull-downs 
  • Assisted pull-ups 
  • Resistance band exercises 
  • Carrying moderately heavy objects instead of always using a cart 

These movements naturally challenge your hands while strengthening your back, shoulders, hips, legs, and core at the same time.

If you'd like additional grip-specific work, inexpensive hand grippers, therapy putty, tennis balls, or hanging from a pull-up bar can provide extra training.


Don't Forget Protein

Exercise provides the stimulus for muscle growth, but your muscles also need the raw materials to rebuild. Many women over 40 consume significantly less protein than they realize. While individual needs vary based on body size, activity level, and health conditions, ensuring adequate daily protein intake becomes increasingly important during and after menopause when preserving muscle mass becomes more challenging.

Creatine supplementation may also benefit some women, particularly those participating in resistance training, as growing research suggests it can help improve muscle performance and preserve lean body mass.

 

Consistency Beats Intensity

You don't need to become a competitive powerlifter to improve your grip—or your health. Two or three sessions of resistance training each week can produce meaningful improvements in muscle strength over time. Even small increases add up, making everyday activities easier while reducing your long-term risk of disability.

Remember, your muscles respond to what you ask them to do. If you rarely challenge them, they gradually become weaker. If you use them consistently, they often surprise you with just how much strength they can regain.

Grip strength may seem like an unusual health metric, but it tells us an incredible amount about what's happening throughout the rest of the body. A weaker grip can serve as an early warning sign of declining muscle health, while improving grip strength often reflects improvements in overall strength, mobility, balance, and independence. 

Your goal isn't simply to live longer—it's to remain strong enough to enjoy those extra years. Maintaining muscle strength, including grip strength, is one of the best investments you can make in your future health.
